Design Works – The Art of Reinvention

AA Thornton Sallys Blog March 2026

This month, we take a look at our ‘Melt and Make Service’ where our goldsmith uses his skill and expertise to melt down unused or perhaps worn inherited pieces of gold jewellery and turns them into something new.

We were asked by our lovely client to use several unwanted rings to create just one ring and to re purpose some of her diamonds.   After exploring various design options, it was decided to create a chunky domed ring and use one of the larger diamonds at the head of the ring as a focal point.   We then turned our attention to different setting styles, finally choosing a star effect which further enhances the sparkly diamond.

Work in progress shows the clients gold which has been melted down into an ingot. This is then formed into a ring, marked out showing a centred position of the stone. Our goldsmith then works his magic by refining the rings shape.

He then progresses to polishing the ring, hand engraving the star setting before finally setting the diamond. These processes all require separate skills in themselves.

The next ‘Melt and Make’ design I can show you is a tale of two rings. These two sentimental signet rings belonged to our client’s family and over time had lots of wear and now were too worn to use. We were asked to use this precious gold and melt down and create a wearable new signet ring.

The starting point was to look at different signet patterns. We always have available a number of our own signets which helped the client choose the preferred size and shape of head.  Once the pattern was chosen, the rings were passed over to our goldsmith in our workshop to start the melting process.

Firstly, he melted down the rings together with additional gold needed to make a gold ingot.  With the ingot made, he then marked out to create the preferred shape before skilfully polishing the finished piece.

Making something as simple as a twisted wire ring is just one of the many ideas that our workshop can create.  A recent example of this was using our clients unused gold cluster ring. The first process is melting the ring down and poured into an ingot mould. The cooled gold ingot bar is then fed through rolling mills and shaped into wire. The wire is cleverly twisted together to the desired shape, size and polished to create something truly special.

Using your old gold items is such a great way of recycling so if you have a piece of jewellery that remains unworn, why not re-invent it?

I feel that we are fortunate to have a goldsmith working in our on-site workshop as it is very much part of our business heritage that goes back over 115 years. This month I thought I would take a look at one of the many things we do in the workshop, which we call ‘Melt and Make’. This is when we recycle old gold, often using unwanted family jewellery that has been kept for years and re work this into something new. I cannot help but admire the expertise this needs and the best way to show this skill is through some pictures of a recent project we have undertaken. We were asked by one of our lovely clients to melt down two gold rings and re use her gold to make a three stone pendant adding in some of her diamonds to give it some sparkle! With this as a starting point, we set about exploring designs that she liked and focused on key elements that were important to her.
