Jewellery Stories – from the workshop

This month we’re back to the workshop. I’ve mixed it up a bit in this month’s article to include a couple of ‘before and afters’ and touching on some of our design and CAD work.

This glorious opal and diamond cluster ring originally started its life as a brooch.  The brooch was passed down through three generations, but was rarely worn so we were approached to see if we could make a ring using the opal and diamonds.

Having looked at various ring designs, a claw setting was chosen as this elevated the beauty of the opal.   As a result, this infrequently used brooch has been transformed into a piece of jewellery which we hope the fourth generation will love and wear before being passed on to the next.

Some jewellery that we see has been loved and worn to a point where it is not always possible to restore or work on. This was the case for this engagement ring which was first purchased for our client’s mum. It was then passed onto the second generation who asked us to remake the ring so it could be worn again by the third generation.

The option here was to remake the ring using the client’s stones and the skill needed was to recreate the ring as sympathetically to the original.  The starting point in this jewellery process is a sketch.  From there, we progress to CAD work to ensure all the fine details such as the height, proportion are correct before making a 3D resin. Once we have approved this, the ring is then made. We show the rings progression and expertise needed before completion.

With the finished ring, its story continues with the next generation once again wearing it as an engagement ring. What a heart-warming tale…

This pretty three stone amethyst ring was given to this lady when she was fourteen years old.   The ring originally belonged to her great grandmother and was given to her by her husband in the First World War. Unfortunately, over time, a stone had fallen out and the ring looked worse for wear.

Finding a suitable replacement stone proved quite tricky as is often the case when the original stones have been sourced together. Sometimes, a compromise has to be considered if it is not possible to find a good colour match. So, it was agreed to replace the two outer stones and move one of the original stones to the centre. The ring now has had its makeover and is ready to be enjoyed once more…

We would like to thank everyone who allows us to share their jewellery stories with us. The history and back stories make it feel real and it’s particularly special as we play our part in our clients’ jewellery journey.
